| In the year 2000, the Newaygo Carnegie Library (and its
Croton Branch) was the only library in Newaygo County that did not have
a Friends of the Library organization supporting its efforts. Over the
course of three months early that year, a committed group of volunteers,
with the help of the Friends organization from White Cloud, founded the
Newaygo Carnegie and Croton Friends of the Library. Though over the
years the group’s name has changed (it’s now known as the Friends of the
Newaygo Area District Library (NADL)) and different members have served
as officers, there has never been a change in the organization’s
commitment to supporting the Library. Through activity and advocacy
within the community and through fund-raising programs, the Friends have
increased the presence of and the resources for NADL. The Friends have
participated in such community events as the Newaygo Arts and Crafts
Show, the Business Expo, the Labor Day Parade, and the Christmas Walk at
which they give out refreshments while conducting a much anticipated
bake-sale.
The majority of the funds raised by the Friends comes from the sale
of donated items at our Bookstore. Begun many years ago in a small room
in the basement of the Library, the Bookstore is now located in the
former community room in the Newaygo City Hall. Countless volunteer
hours are spent organizing the wide variety of books and materials given
to the Friends by generous supporters of the Library. Open one or two
days a week during the warm months, the Bookstore has enabled the
Friends to enhance the Library and its programs in a number of
significant ways by providing funds for:
Books and Bookcases
Library Remodeling
Decorative Rugs
Computer Chairs
Digital camera
Reading Programs
Guest Speakers
Today, members of the Friends continue to give generously of their
time and talents to make the Newaygo Area District Library a better
library for all.
